Donald Shively
Donald Owen "Doc" Shively, age 84, of rural Celina, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater.
Born August 9, 1935, in Celina, he was a son of the late Otis C. & Aileen R. (West) Shively.
Donald and Joyce Schott were married on December 14, 1957, and she survives, along with three daughters: Diane (Edward) Neargarder of St. Marys, Dawn (William) Jaggers of Syracuse, IN, and Della Shively of Celina, seven grandchildren: April, Heath, John, Melanie, Adam, Tyler and Sydney, many great grandchildren, and a brother, Dale Shively and son-in-law, Sheldon Maxwell, both of Portland, IN.
Preceding him in death was a daughter, Debra A. "Debbie" Maxwell, who died June 6, 2003, and four sisters: Ruth Jenkins, Mary Weisman, Wanda Byrum and Vivian Joan Shively.
Doc attended Celina High School and was a "Jack of All Trades." Over the years, he held many jobs, often two or three at a time. He had been employed by the late Dr. LeRoy Weber, worked as a diesel mechanic at Celina Truck & Tractor, and repaired trucks for Borden's Ice Cream. He was co-owner, along with Woody Wilson, of Triangle Services Trucking Company. Doc and his wife Joyce, were the owners of DJ Repair.
He enjoyed working on foreign cars and repairing lawn mowers. Doc also painted trucks for UPS, and finally retired from Tranco in New Bremen. A favorite pastime Doc loved was playing with antique tractors. He displayed his antique tractors, sawmill, and "hit and miss" engine at various shows and festivals in the area.
A member of the Celina Men's Garden Club, Doc enjoyed gardening and had his own greenhouse. Fishing and spending time with his grandchildren, were other activities that Doc enjoyed. He attended Beaver Chapel Congregational Christian Church near Celina. Doc was a loving, giving man, always helpful to friends and neighbors.
Calling Hours are 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday, July 27, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.
Private Funeral Services will be held for the family, with Rev. Tom Christen, officiating. Burial will take place at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.
Attendees at the visitation and funeral are asked to please wear masks, practice social distancing, and follow the COVID-19 guidelines established by the Ohio Department of Health and Governor DeWine.
