Woman, 18, killed in Sunday accident
By William Kincaid
DUBLIN TOWNSHIP - An 18-year-old St. Marys woman has been identified as the person killed in a two-vehicle, head-on collision on U.S. 127 at Shelley Road on Sunday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Wapakoneta post
Chelsea M. Mabry was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Mercer County Coroner Timothy Heinrichs, an Ohio State Highway Patrol news release states.
The crash remains under investigation.
At 3:33 p.m. a 2002 silver Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Mabry was southbound on U.S. 127 when it traveled left-of-center and struck head-on a northbound 2002 Freightliner semitrailer, according to the release. Neither vehicle had passengers.
"The single driver out of the Pontiac sustained fatal injuries as a result, and the semi truck driver had minor injuries," Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Lamarr of the Wapakoneta Post told the newspaper on the scene of the accident.
The driver of the semitrailer, William Mims, 57, of Belhaven, North Carolina, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene by Mercer County Emergency Medical Services. Both Mabry and Mims had been wearing seatbelts and neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been a factor, the release states.
Wapakoneta post personnel on Sunday evening could be seen reconstructing the accident to the backdrop of the badly mangled Grand Prix and wreckage debris strewn about the highway.
Wapakoneta post personnel were assisted on the scene by the Rockford Fire Department, Mendon Fire Department, Mercer County EMS, Mercer County Sheriff's Office, Mercer County Emergency Management Agency, Ohio Department of Transportation, Mercer County Emergency Response Volunteers, State of Ohio Motor Carrier Enforcement, Mercer County Coroner's Office, Hogenkamp and Sons Funeral Home, Jackson's Towing and Dublin Township trustees.
A stretch U.S. 127 north of U.S. 33 and south of State Route 117 remained closed as emergency responders worked the scene. It reopened at about 7:30 a.m. Monday.
