Alvin Wendel
Alvin A. Wendel, 81, of Fort Recovery, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at his home. He was born on August 23, 1939, in Fort Recovery, to the late Frank and Elenora (Homan) Wendel.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Ann (Homan) Wendel, whom he married on May 5, 1962; his children, Steve (Amy) Wendel of Ft. Recovery, Cathy (Mark) Brockman of Ft. Recovery, Dan (Theresa) Wendel of Ft. Recovery, Sharon (Kevin) Fortkamp of Ft. Recovery, Linda (Jeff) Nietfeld of Ft. Recovery, Marilyn (Roger) Rammel of Ft. Recovery, Chuck (Tricia) Wendel of St. Henry, Barb (Randy) Alig of Ft. Recovery, Eric (Amy) Wendel of Ft. Recovery, Joe (Mary) Wendel of St. Henry, and Alan (Kristen) Wendel of Vandalia; his 44 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren; his siblings, Imelda (Jerome) Wilker of New Bremen, Elmer Wendel of Ft. Recovery, and Melvin Wendel of Coldwater; his brother-in-law, Eugene Homan of California; and his special relatives, Delores Homan, Janet and Jim McEldowney, Jim Boehmer, Eileen and Art Dapore, Mary Keller, Charlene Homan, Carolyn and Dave Kreischer, and Doris and Phil Sheffer.
In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his infant son, David; his grandchildren, Devin and Marissa Wendel; his in-laws, Aloys and Eleanor (Schulte) Homan; his siblings, Novella (Albert) Lauber, Ermin (Regina) Wendel, Thelma (Irvin) Schindler, Werner (Patricia) Wendel, and Virgil Wendel; his sisters-in-law, Joan Wendel and Etsuko Homan; his special relatives, Gerald Homan, Millie Boehmer, Joe Keller, and Herb Homan.
Alvin was a 1957 graduate of Fort Recovery High School. He joined the United States Army Reserves, where he served his country honorably. Alvin worked for Cooper Farms in Fort Recovery for over 50 years.
Alvin loved his family. From his children to his great grandchildren, they all made his face light up. He also deeply cared for his community. Alvin served on the Fort Recovery Fire Department for many years and served as Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Mercer County Firefighters Association, where he served as Secretary/Treasurer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 345, in Fort Recovery, where he served as past Post Commander and was a honor guard member. He was also a devout Catholic and was an active member at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, with Father Ned Brown as celebrant. Burial, with full military honors provided by the Fort Recovery American Legion, will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Recovery.
Guests may visit with Alvin's family on Monday, February 15, 2021 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Brockman Boeckman Funeral Home, and again on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM also at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to State of the Heart Care or the Fort Recovery Firefighters Association.
