Homan off to a great start for Cougars

FOOTBALL

Will Homan made the most out of his first game of the football season for the University of St. Francis.

The Fort Recovery native and Cougars sophomore was named the Mid-States Football Association's Mideast Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Cougars open the season with a 24-10 win over Taylor at Bishop D'arcy Stadium in Fort Wayne.

Homan rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown and caught a pass for another score in the victory for USF, ranked ninth in the NAIA poll.

The Cougars travel to Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Saturday for another MSFA contest.

Murlin producing for Saints

Also in MSFA play, Siena Heights is 0-2 on the season after falling 17-10 to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday in Marion, Indiana.

Junior linebacker Kole Murlin (Celina) recorded six tackles in the loss to the Wildcats.

Siena Heights returns to action Saturday at home in Adrian, Michigan, against Lawrence Tech. The Saints hosts St. Francis on April 3.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sutter an All-American again

Indiana Wesleyan senior Paige Sutter (Celina) added to her stellar career resume at the NAIA National Championships held over the weekend in Yankton, South Dakota.

Sutter was runner-up in the shot put with a top effort of 14.03 meters (46 feet, 1/2 inch) that set a school record. Sutter had previously won the Crossroads League shot put title and finished third in the league weight throw.

Break has solid indoor season

University of Findlay freshman Jessica Break (Coldwater) wrapped up her indoor track season with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.

Break topped out at 3.52 meters (11-61/2). Her Oiler teammates Morgan England and Lindsey Kluesener finished 1-2 in the standings with England earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II championships this week with a top effort of 13-51/4 and Kluesener holding a provisional spot.

The Oilers finished second to Hillsdale 188-148 in the championship standings.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Bruns All-G-MAC

Findlay ended its season in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals with a 76-73 loss to Cedarville to end the regular season at 18-5. The Oilers were not among the teams receiving at-large bids for the NCAA Division II tournament that begins Friday.

Oiler sophomore Nathan Bruns (Marion Local) was selected first team All-G-MAC by the conference coaches. Bruns averaged 13.7 points and a team-high rebounds per game for the Oilers.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Musketeers bow out of Big East Tournament

Xavier ended its season with a 65-57 loss to St. John's in the Big East tournament at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. The Musketeers finished 5-10 overall and 2-8 in conference.

Sophomore Courtney Prenger (Minster) had two points and an assist in 15 minutes of playing time in the contest. Prenger ended her season averaging 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 11 games.

Division IV Boys Basketball Regional Final Preview
The last time New Bremen reached this level of the state boys basketball tournament, it was Burt Fiser in the coach's chair as the Cardinals lost to Continental 65-62 at Anderson Arena at Bowling Green State University.

Minster football coach Geron Stokes is stepping down to take the head coaching position at Dublin Coffman.
Athletic Director Josh Clune confirmed the move on Wednesday afternoon. Stokes didn't respond to a request for comment.
