Herbert Hoying
Herbert G. Hoying, 97 of Sidney passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 4:26 PM at Upper Valley Medical Center.
He was born on December 13, 1923 in Shelby County, Ohio, the son of the late Clem and Frances (Baumer) Hoying. On September 24, 1947, Herbert married the former Dorothy Frey, who preceded him in death March 9, 2012. They have been married for 65 years.
He is survived by four children, John (Jan) Hoying of Celina, Karen (Fred) Kautman of Decorah, Iowa, Gary (Kathleen) Hoying and Alan (Kim) Hoying; eight grandchildren, Lynn (Rich) Roesch, Greg (Mindy) Hoying, Jim (Denise) Hoying, Mitch (Julie) Hoying, Andrew (Laura) Kautman, Tony (Ale) Kautman, Sarah (Chad) Martz and Emily (Cory) Eisenhardt; twenty great-grandchildren; sister Lillian Zimmerman of Minster; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice Frey of Osgood, Walter Braun of Marie Stein, Marilyn Homan of Coldwater and Bertie and Willard Bruns of St. Sebastian and numerous nieces and nephews.
Herbert was preceded in death by granddaughter, Laura Hoying, two siblings, Vernon (Betty) Hoying and Fritz (Erma) Hoying, nine sisters and brothers-in-law, Richard Zimmerman, Lucille (Andy) Bergman, Ralph (Esther) Frey, Walt Frey, Alvin Frey, Betty (Cyril) Overman, Marian Braun, Donald Homan and Morris (Julie) Frey.
Herbert spent his youth on a farm in St. Patricks, Ohio. He graduated from Fort Loramie High School in 1941. Herbert served in the United States Army in the European Theatre from 1943 to 1945 and was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He retired from Monarch Machine Tool after 46 years of service and assisted at Regal Trophy for more than 40 years. Herbert was a member of the Sidney American Legion Post 217 in which he served as a Post Commander, District 2 Commander and Post Treasurer. He was instrumental in organizing Sidney Amateur Baseball Committee and was the treasurer for over 25 years. Herbert was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church where he was an usher for more than 40 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday September 15, 2021 at 10 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Jarred Kohn officiating.
There will be no visitation prior to the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow with Full Military Honors presented by the Sidney Veterans Honor Guard and the United State Army at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to may be made to Holy Angels Grade School or Holy Angels Soup Kitchen in memory of Herbert.
