Alvera Mertz
Alvera J. Mertz, 92, of New Weston, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater, Ohio.
She was born on June 28, 1929, in New Weston, to the late Robert and Bertha (Gaier) Steinbrunner.
In addition to her parents, Alvera was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mertz, whom she married on February 24, 1949; her grandson, William Matthew Mertz; sons-in-law, John Holthaus and Garold Rismiller; and her daughter-in-law, Bets Mertz .
Alvera was a caring and selfless person. She raised a family of 13, along side her husband, Robert, while also caring for her own mother. Her patience, hard working and caring personality, and radiant love rubbed off on all those who knew her. Alvera made sure others were taken care of before herself. She was always the first to get up and the last to go to bed each day. Alvera was a great cook and an even better baker. In her free time, she enjoyed reading and doing embroidery. Alvera and Robert made thousands of rosaries over the years that they donated to various missions and prisons. She was a life-long member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
Alvera is survived by her children, Catherine Holthaus of Sidney, Ohio, Karen Rosengarten of Tipp City, Ohio, Donald (Donna) Mertz of Celina, Ohio, Irene Rismiller of New Weston, Rose (Bill) Payne of Anna, Ohio, Marie (Jim) Gengler of Coldwater, John (Katrina Wellman) Mertz of St. Henry, Ohio, Paul (Carrol) Mertz of Fort Recovery, Ohio, Dot (Chris) Dues of Coldwater, Bert (Jim) Hamberg of Tipp City, Ohio, Barb (Jerry) Fullenkamp of Coldwater, Joe (Deb) Mertz of Maria Stein, Ohio, and Nancy (Dan) Rindler of Coldwater; and her 47 grandchildren and 75 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 18, 2021, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville, Ohio. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery.
