By Sandy Rose Schwieterman
One person was killed after being ejected from a van and three were injured in a two-vehicle crash reported at 7:58 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of State Route 49 and Hunter road in Darke County.
The name of the deceased was not available by press time Thursday as Darke County sheriff's deputies were contacting next of kin.
In critical condition after the accident were Rex Zizelman, 74, Celina, and Coty Alderman, 27, Troy, and in stable condition was Roxine Beals, 53, Celina, according to a news release from the Darke County Sheriff's Office.
According to a preliminary investigation, Alderman was driving a Honda Accord westbound on Hunter Road and failed to yield the right of way to a Mercer County Veterans Services van driven by Zizelman southbound on State Route 49.
Alderman's car reportedly struck the passenger side of the van before both vehicles traveled off the roadway and came to rest on the southwest side of the intersection.
Rescue crews reportedly used mechanical means to extricate Alderman from his car and Beals from the van. Beals reportedly was a front seat passenger in the van.
Alderman, Zizelman and Beals were transported to Wayne Hospital in Greenville and later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
The person killed reportedly was in the rear of the van and was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Assisting at the scene were Greenville Township Rescue, Greenville Township Fire Department, the Greenville Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue, Union City Rescue, Darke County Coroner's Office and the Darke County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Team, according to the release.
