Cavs sweep quad meet
By Tom Haines
COLDWATER - Coldwater swept a quad meet with three Midwest Athletic Conference rivals at Cavalier Stadium on Tuesday.
The Cavalier girls beat second-place St. Henry by 40 points, while the boys held off Parkway 88-78.
"Obviously, love the good weather," Coldwater coach Mark Bruns said. "Saw a lot of good performances, lot of PRs. Kids really stepped up today."
Carlee Goodwin earned a pair of wins for Coldwater, taking first in the high jump and the 300-meter hurdles. Haley Alig won the 800 and the 1,600, Jenna Leugers won the 100 hurdles and the pole vault, and Izzy Zahn took first place in the 200 and the long jump.
The Cavaliers' girls relays were also on point, earning wins in all four races and winning three by 15 seconds or more. The St. Henry girls came the closest in the 4x100, with the Cavaliers' team of Allison Hamberg, Olivia Tobe, Kiersten Keller and Zahn holding off the Redskins 54.83-56.08.
"We're hoping all our relays can make some noise," Bruns said. "We feel like we've got a lot of talent in that. We took three (girls) relays to state last year and all of them placed. We're looking to do four if we can, because we've got some young talent."
On the boys side, Jack Riethman and Tyler Schwieterman each notched a pair of wins, with Riethman taking first in the 100 and the 200 and Schwieterman winning the 110 hurdles and the high jump.
Parkway's Blake Strickler turned in wins in the 800 and the 1,600. New Knoxville swept the girls throwing events, with Avery Henschen winning the discus and Ally Topp taking first in the shot put.
St. Henry's boys had a pair of dramatic wins at the end of the meet, starting with Josh Rindler's triumph in the 3,200. Rindler was in the leaders' pack the whole race, with Parkway's Tyler Rowen leading most of the way. Rowen held off a push by Rindler and Coldwater's Mason Ayers with about five laps to go and had reopened the lead by the final lap, but Rindler blazed down the homestretch and passed Rowen in the last few feet.
"That kick was crazy," St. Henry coach Matt Thobe said. "I was not expecting that. It only happened on the backstretch, out of nowhere, he's running like he's running the 100-meter dash. That was fun to watch. It's always fun to watch kids finish the races like that."
In the 4x400, the Redskins had opened up a wide lead in the first half of the race before Coldwater came roaring back. Justin Gruss cut into the lead in the third leg and Josh Schoen made a charge in the final leg, creeping right up behind St. Henry's Jason Balster before Balster held him off in the final push.
St. Henry's Brandon Keller was the only one to break Coldwater's monopoly on the boys' field events, earning a victory in the discus.
"He's been throwing in the 130s all the time, tonight he pushed to 148," Thobe said. "We're happy about that. Just want to see that improvement."
Coldwater and St. Henry return to action Saturday at the Minster Memorial. New Knoxville and Parkway resume Tuesday, as the Rangers travel to New Bremen and Parkway hosts a tri-meet with Marion and St. John's.
