Mattie Weng
Mattie Lou Weng, 96, of St. Marys, OH, passed peacefully in the loving arms of her family on Friday, October, 28, 2022.
Mattie was born Dec. 29, 1925 in Hawkinsville, GA, the daughter of Ethel and Elijah Bridges.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters; Minnie Davis of Warner Robins Ga., & Mary "Nell" Bramblett of Perry, GA., 3 brothers; Bivens Bridges of Tallahassee, FL., William Bridges of Perry, GA., and Preston Bridges of Hawkinsville, GA. She also had 3 half-sisters and 8 half-brothers, all from the GA/FL area.  She was also predeceased by an infant grandson, John Russell Weng IV.
Mattie graduated from Hawkinsville, GA High School in 1943, and married John G, Weng Jr. of Dayton, OH, shortly after his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1945, where he served in the European Theater during WWII. They were married 46 years when he died on 8/12/1991. They had 2 sons, Ted Russell Weng and John Harold Weng III, both of whom also preceded her in death.  Mattie was re-married in 1992 to Albert Neace of Dayton, OH, and he died on September 13, 2001.
Mattie is survived by: a Granddaughter, Shari (Arthur) Naugle of Ashtabula, OH, a Grandson, Christopher (Sandy) Weng of St. Marys, OH, 3 Great Grandchildren: Carrie (Marcus) Neal of St. Marys, OH, Paul Lauth II of Ashtabula, OH, Danielle (Alex Norvell) Naugle of Celina, OH, 8 Great Great Grandchildren; Emma, Ava, and Jack Neal of St. Marys, OH, Shae, Vivian and Paul Lauth III, of Ashtabula, OH, Tara and Aubrey Norvell of Celina, OH. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Judy Weng of St. Marys, OH, as well as numerous nieces & nephews.
For most of her adult life, Mattie made her home with her family in the Dayton/Huber Heights, OH area, working 40+ years first as waitress, then head of banquets, club meetings, weddings, and events for the historic Van Cleve Hotel, downtown Dayton.  Following the closing of the Van Cleve Hotel in 1967, she continued her career at the Stratford House, which later became known as the Ramada Inn Stratford House Hotel in downtown Dayton until her retirement. Following the death of her second husband, she moved to Celina, OH, in 2002, where she lived for 16 years, and in 2018, to St. Marys, OH, to be closer to family.
Mattie's life loves were her work and her family. She will be fondly remembered for loading her sons (and any of their friends that wanted to go), and later grandchildren into her car and taking them all on her yearly summer vacations to visit relatives in Georgia. Each year, the clubs that she worked for would generously contribute bags of quarters as a special tip for the hotel arcade games for all the kids during the drive. As a proud grandmother, she bravely weathered many rain & snow storms to attend St. Marys Roughrider and University of Cincinnati football games into her mid 80's. She was famous for her holiday cooking, and stocking all of the family freezers with her wonderful homemade soups before every winter. She will always be greatly loved, missed and cherished by all who knew her as "Granny".
Private family visitation, services and burial will be held at the Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
