Charles Umstead
Charles F. (Pops) Umstead, formerly of New Bremen and Coldwater, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at his residence at Otterbein, St. Mary's, Ohio.
Charles was born on April 5,1934 to the late Floyd and Wilma (Valentine) Umstead in Sidney, Ohio. On August 18, 1964, he married Rosemary Turckes, who preceded him in death on July 2, 2009.
Charles is survived by his very special companion Mary Anne Padden of Rockford, his beloved dog Coco and children Kathleen (David Marks, Sr.) Umstead, Miamisburg, Theresia (Michelle Motter) Umstead, Ypsilanti, MI, Charles (Chuck) E. (Leyla Sehat) Umstead, Saratoga Springs, NY and Richard (Anita Vega) Umstead of Coldwater. Grandchildren Brittney (Jordan) Arnold of Ohio City, Katelyn (Adrian Garcia Mendoza) Umstead of Canary Islands, Spain, Victoria (Ryan) Dues of St. Anthony, Brandon (Andrea Baker) Umstead of Kansas City, KS, Michael (Marissa Ohl) Umstead of Utica NY and Rebecca Umstead of Saratoga Springs, NY. Great grandchild August "Gus" Charles Dues of Ft. Recovery, OH. He is also survived by brother and sister-in law Carlton and Shirley Umstead, Anna OH and brother in-law William Dismukes, Mobile AL. Charles is survived by 17 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews as well many cousins.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Wilma (Valentine) Umstead, father/mother in-law William and Theresia (Sudhoff) Turckes, brother Jerome Umstead, sister Carolyn Dismukes, brother/sister in-laws Joseph and Genevieve Turckes, Raymond and Irene Turckes and Richard Turckes.
Charles graduated from Sidney High School, Sidney OH in 1952, the University of Dayton in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He taught at Ft. Recovery Local Schools for seven years during and after the completion of his BS. He then went on to attend Ball State University graduating with a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education in 1974. Charles taught at Coldwater High School for three years and Jay County IN schools from where he retired in 1994 after 20 years of service. He held numerous part time summer jobs over the years to include but were not limited to being the pool manager at Coldwater's Memorial Park and the Coldwater Shell Station.
Charles served in the US Navy aboard the USS Stormes DD-780 stationed in New London, CT from 1952-1956. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Assembly No. 825 in Minster and a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1991 in Coldwater. He served as District Deputy for District 58 from July 1, 1971 to June 30, 1973. He was a member of The National Association of Destroyer Veterans. He was a life time member of the VFW as well as local VFW Post 5135 and American Legion Post 0470 both in Coldwater, the NRA, the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, Grand Lake Guns Range, New Bremen Rod & Gun Club, Shawnee Long Rifles, Wapakoneta, OH. He served Boy Scout Troop 96 in Coldwater as Scout Master from 1980-1985. A very special thank you to Grand Lake Home Health & Hospice for helping us keep dad at home and comfortable during this difficult time.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater. Burial with military rites will follow in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Coldwater.
Friends may call from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday, June 21, and from 9am to 10am on Thursday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Lake Hospice.
