The Celina girls golf team captured the first official Western Buckeye League tournament championship by winning a tiebreaker over Defiance on Tuesday at Memorial Park Golf Course in Kenton.
The Bulldogs, who won the league invitational last season, finished the day tied with Defiance with matching rounds of 395, calling for the tiebreaker based on the fifth-best score for each team. Celina's Kiera Hurley shot a 115, four strokes better than Defiance's Lilly Whiteford (119), which made the difference for the title.
Shawnee was third with a 448 with Wapakoneta fourth at 453. St. Marys was fifth with a 464, followed by Ottawa-Glandorf (477), Kenton (507) and Bath (515).
Celina's Maddie Fleck used a solid back nine to pull away to win the individual championship with a score of 80, four strokes ahead of runner-up Ava Hesselschwardt of Defiance (84). The two were the only golfers to break 90 on the day. Defiance's Kaylee Harsha was third with a 96.
Sara Tester added a 100 for Celina with Brooke Baucher carding a 105. Maddicyn Brumbaugh finished with a 110 with Regan Sibert adding a 115.
St. Marys was led by Lilleigh Sampson's 108. Kaitlyn Gross shot a 112 with Ava Klosterman carding a 120. Hannah Jeanneret (120), Rilyn McGlothen (132) and Taylor Gates (138) completed the Roughriders' scorecard.
Fleck, Tester, Baucher, Sampson and Brumbaugh all received first-team All-WBL honors for finishing in the top 12. Honorable mentions as nominated by their coaches went to Sibert for Celina and Gross for St. Marys.
