A firefighter sprays water toward a home near the site of a fire at 6185 Erastus Durbin Road on Friday night. A workshop on the property was deemed a total loss after it catching fire.
COLDWATER- A maintenance shop located just outside of Coldwater was destroyed by flames mid evening on Friday.
No one was injured in the blaze but the shop was deemed a total loss, according to Southwest Mercer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Kaffenberger.
Owner Dave Adams reportedly was working on equipment in the shop located at 6185 Erastus Durbin Road before leaving to check on his livestock, Kaffenberger said. Adams had just returned when he discovered the fire and called authorities around 5:52 p.m., Kaffenberger said.
Upon arrival, Kaffenberger said the 40-by-50-foot maintenance shop was fully engulfed and the roof had collapsed.
"(We) fought it from the outside because the inside was fully engulfed," he said.
It took firefighters on scene about an hour to control the blaze, he added.
Approximately six fire trucks and 25 firefighter from Southwest Mercer and Coldwater fire departments responded to the scene, along with Celina EMS.
Kaffenberger said the cause of the fire was believed to be caused by unattended equipment in the workshop. He was unsure of the damage estimate or if the building was insured. Foul play is not suspected, he added.
