Celina man hauling 200 pigs, injured in accident
By Erin Gardner
A 43-year-old Celina man was seriously injured on Tuesday morning after he lost control of his semitrailer hauling about 200 pigs and struck a bridge support, closing a ramp to Interstate 70 in Montgomery County for several hours.
Derrick Selhorst was driving a 2001 Mack commercial semitrailer on the ramp from State Route 49 to I-70 eastbound in Clay Township, according to a news release from the Dayton Post of the State Highway Patrol.
He failed to negotiate a curve on the ramp, ran off the right side of the roadway and stuck a bridge support for the Diamond Mill overpass before overturning at 5:18 a.m.
He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital with serious injuries.
The semitrailer was transporting about 200 mature pigs from Rossburg to Louisville, Kentucky, per the release.
Authorities corralled the pigs that got loose onto I-70, but roughly half were killed in the crash or injured and had to be euthanized, according to the State Highway Patrol.
The crash closed the ramp just northwest of Dayton for more than eight hours and remains under investigation.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Ohio Department of Transportation, Clay Township Police Department, Englewood Fire/Emergency Medical Services, Brookville Fire/EMS, Dull Homestead Farm and Englewood Towing.
