Mary Schmitmeyer
Mary Ann (Albers) Schmitmeyer, age 84, of Monterey Drive, Fort Loramie, passed away peacefully of natural causes early Monday morning, July 29, 2024, at Ohio's Hospice of Miami County in Troy, Ohio, after having been seriously ill for three weeks. She was born October 1, 1939, in Fort Loramie, Ohio, to the late William & Theresia (Sherman) Albers. On October 12, 1960, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, Mary Ann married Roger Schmitmeyer who preceded her in death on January 26, 2016.
She is survived by six children: Diane & Mark Riethman of Fort Loramie, Tom & Luann (Comer)Schmitmeyer of Jackson Center, Tony & Janine (DeLong) Schmitmeyer of Fort Loramie, Dennis & Laura (Boeke) Schmitmeyer of Fort Loramie, Julie & Ken Francis of Russia and Gary & Kelly (Bornhorst) Schmitmeyer of Anna; 15 grandchildren: Evan Riethman and Marissa Riethman & fiancé Andy Meyer; Morgan & David Barham and Levi Schmitmeyer; Alyson, Taylor and Julia Schmitmeyer; Rachel Schmitmeyer; Kayla & Chett Borchers, Lauren & Brett Meiring, Nolan & Avery Francis and Carter Francis; Jodie & Jordan Kremer, Mindy & Evan Golightly, Ben Schmitmeyer & fiancée Julia Wilker along with 9 great-grandchildren: Amara, Leo, and Blaise Borchers; Ava and Jackson Barham; Charlotte Meiring (and one on the way); Ellie and Bridget Golightly and Sophia Kremer; one brother, Dr. Robert Albers of Coldwater and a sister-in-law, Martha (Schmitmeyer-Schlater) Thobe of Chickasaw as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five siblings: infant Mary Albers, Cletus & Irene Albers, Urban & Violet Albers, Rosemary & Norman Menker, Jeanette & Robert Weaver and several sisters & brothers-in-law: Viola Albers, Urban Schlater, Cy Thobe, Sister Dorothy Schmitmeyer, Donald & Marilyn Schmitmeyer and Jerome & Kathleen Schmitmeyer.
Mary Ann was a 1957 graduate of Fort Loramie High School. She was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church where she taught 3rd grade religion. She was also a mass greeter and delivered monthly communion and holiday flowers to those in nursing homes. She belonged to Saint Ann's Altar Society and the Fort Loramie American Legion Auxiliary. Mary Ann, who lost her mother at a young age, learned the importance of family, and she valued hers dearly, devoting her life to her family. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, tending her roses, traveling on bus excursions and attending all the Fort Loramie sporting events as a passionate fan. She also loved to decorate cakes; her family was often gifted with a beautiful cake for special occasions. As of late, Mary Ann loved eating out whenever she could as well as special outings spent with her family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 1, 2024, at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie with Rev. John Tonkin presiding. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.
Family and friends may call Wednesday, 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Thursday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Miami County or the Heritage Canal Park Fund c/o The Community Foundation of Shelby County.
