Grand Lake Fishing Report

Still plenty of good fishing

By Matt Tuttle

Good day everyone. Hope all is well with you.

We have been very lucky this year with the weather. Yes, it has been hot, but there have been a lot of days that are perfect getting together and enjoying our lake.

There is something for everyone going on and around the lake. Some places have bands and food, others have activities for every age group.

Also, on the fishing side, don't forget the Tagged Frenzy event with crappie and catfish tagged worth money.

You do have to have your badge purchased to be qualified for the prize money if you do catch a tagged fish. You can stop at Eastside Bait and Tackle to purchase your badge.

Since we are talking about fishing, I want to take a minute to talk about my set up that I fish with. I use a 10-foot Outlaw Pro Series rod, paired with a Pflueger 25 series Trion reel, spooled with six-pound Slimeline hi-vis Green line.

What this rod allows me to do is keep one rod in my hand no matter what I am fishing such as a dock, boat lift, brush piles, lay-down logs, rock banks and stake beds. I can cast with it, dip with it, flip it, and side cast or overhand cast it.

Now, I do carry all lengths of rods with me for other various situations, but the 10-foot Outlaw is my everyday fish anything utility rod. All the above equipment can be purchased at Eastside Bait and Tackle in St Mary's and at Spillway Bait and tackle at Lake Loramie.

I am still catching crappies off of boat lifts in 3-4 feet of water especially on the corners of the lifts and anywhere around or in the lift that is shaded, anywhere from 1-3 feet deep.

This week's colors were monkey milk and chartreuse and black and monkey milk. The other areas are the stake beds at the West Bank Boat ramp and the stake beds at the St Mary's Campgrounds.

Next week, I will break down hook sizes and why you need them.

Good luck and enjoy our beautiful Grand Lake!
