Flyers, Redskins, Bulldogs take county honors

The cross country season got underway as Mercer and Auglaize Counties hosted invitationals for their schools.

Marion Township Park in Maria Stein hosted the Mercer County meet, and host Marion Local came away with a win in the high school boys division. The Flyers finished with 40 points with Celina second with 51. Coldwater was third with 65 with St. Henry (76), Parkway (127) and Fort Recovery (134) rounding out the team standings.

The top three runners were separated by less thank eight seconds. Celina's Colin Buening was able to stay ahead of Marion's Dalton Pohlmann and Coldwater's Mason Ayers to cross the finish line in 16:43.71. Pohlman was over two seconds ahead of Ayers in 16:49.87 with Ayers crossing at 16:51.53.

Marion Local's Ryan Stucke and Isaac Bruns were fourth and fifth in the standings. Rounding out the top 10 were Celina's Kaden Steed, Coldwater's Noah Obringer, Celina's Caleb Lehman, Fort Recovery's Reese Diller and St. Henry's Michael Rindler. Parkway was led by Xavier Samples' 16th-place finish.

The St. Henry girls took first place in the high school race, tallying 52 points. Fort Recovery was second with 68 points. Coldwater was third with 84 points with Parkway (95), Celina (97) and Marion Local (101) rounding out the field.

Celina's Jennalee Dameron won the 5,000 race, finishing in 20:23.36. Fort Recovery's Joelle Kaup was second in 20:59.33 followed by Coldwater's Audrey Alig in third at 21:27.92. Parkway's Christina Tong placed fourth in 21:37.03 with Alanna Mescher the first St. Henry runner to finish in taking fifth at 21:45.25.

Rounding out the top 10 were Marion Local's Josie Bruns, St. Henry's Audrey Huelsman, Parkway's Amanda Barrett and Fort Recovery's Anna Roessner and Riley Heitkamp.

In the junior high meet, Celina won the team title in the girls division with Bulldog ElleMiesse winning the 3,200-meter race in 12:45.90. Coldwater's Abby Alig, Celina's Claire Huwer and Janelle Dameron and Marion Local's Honor Fledderjohann rounded out the top five.

St. Henry's Daniel Fullenkamp won the boys junior high race. Coldwater's Ethan Schmitmeyer was second with Fort Recovery's Alex Roessner, St. Henry's Johan Horstman and Celina's Noah Sutter rounding out the top five. No team scores were posted as of press time.

Auglaize County Invitational

The majority of Auglaize County schools traveled to St. Marys to decide county bragging rights.

New Bremen swept the high school titles. The Cardinal boys finished with 22 points with Wapakoneta second, New Knoxville third and St. Marys fourth with Waynesfield-Goshen not having a full team.

Jett Jellison led a Cardinals sweep of the top three finishers, crossing the finish line in 17:32.8. Sam Bernhold edged New Bremen teammate Simon Schroyer by just under three second (18:04.4 to 18:07.2) for second. St. Marys' Gavin Luebke was fourth and Wapakoneta's Hayden Sell was fifth. New Bremen's Caleb Wittenbrink, Wapakoneta's Hans Sammetinger, Christian Augsburger and Wesley Snyder and New Bremen's Aiden Young rounded out the top 10.

The New Bremen girls finished with 23 points with Wapakoneta second with 45. St. Marys and Waynesfield were third and fourth with New Knoxville not fielding a full team.

Cardinal Mia Hirschfeld won the race in 20:05.8, nearly 31 seconds ahead of runner-up Kenzie Schneider of Wapakoneta. New Knoxville's Ariyah Pfenning was third with Wapakoneta's Maci Neumeier and New Bremen's Riley Suchland rounding out the top five. New Bremen's Allyson Pape, Shaylee Boyle and Kara Suchland were sixth through eighth with Wapakoneta's Sylar Good and New Bremen's Aurora Laterbach rounding out the top 10. St. Marys was led by Lauren Schloemer's 11th-place showing.

The junior high boys and girls were run together with New Bremen making it a clean sweep of the team titles by winning the boys and girls junior high standings. Cardinal Izzy Krieg was the top girls junior high finisher in 14:14.1 while New Bremen's Luke Long won in 13:07.1.

VOLLEYBALL

New Bremen 3, Russia 0

The defending two-time state champions began their pursuit of another title with a 25-5, 25-8, 25-13 win over the Raiders at the Nest. The Cardinals served up 20 aces as a team in the contest.

Melina Schrader finished with eight aces, 26 assists and 12 digs for New Bremen. Mary Rindler had 12 kills and Ava Trentman and MariAna Muether each added six kills.

Coldwater 3, Shawnee 0

The Cavaliers improved to 4-0 on the season with the 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 win over the Indians at the Palace.

Morgan Blasingame had 19 kills and Spencer Etzler served up five aces to go with 20 digs. Mia Knapke had 31 assists.

St. Henry 3, Franklin Monroe 0

The Redskins moved to 3-1 on the season with the 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 win over the Jets in Pitsburg.

Ellie Fullenkamp had 12 kills to lead the Redskins. Lauren Thieman had 17 assists and Morgan Baumer recorded 14 digs.

New Knoxville 3, Houston 0

The Rangers picked up their second win of the season with the 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 win over the Wildcats in Shelby County.

Brynn Egbert finished with 11 kills and four blocks. Avery Albers had nine kills, eight digs and five aces. Addi Albers had 17 assists and nine digs to go with five kills.

Fort Loramie 3, Minster 0

The neighbors on the Auglaize-Shelby County line in Minster with the Redskins picking up the 25-9,25-11, 25-16 win over the Wildcats.

Kiersten Williams led Minster with six kills. Kari Heckman added five kills. Brooklyn Osterloh recorded seven assists.

Marion Local 3, Jackson Center 0

The Flyers won their opener for new coach Katherine Dirksen with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 win over the Tigers.

No statistics were submitted before press time.

GIRLS SOCCER

Coldwater 5, Fort Jennings 0

Mia Byer scored twice as the Cavaliers improved to 2-0 with the shutout over the Musketeers at Cavalier Stadium.

Byer got both her goals via assists from Avery Knapke. Knapke, Amanda Clune and Dana Zahn each added single goals.

Sydney Grieshop made two saves to earn the clean sheet in goal.

BOYS SOCCER

Liberty-Benton 4, St. Marys 1

Aiden Hatch scored twice as the Eagles handed the Roughriders a loss in their season opener at Roughrider Field.

Garrett Nealis also had a goal for Liberty-Benton.

GIRLS TENNIS

Bath 4, St. Marys 1

The Roughriders took the loss at the Minster Bank Courts in Western Buckeye League play.

Delanni Wilker and Logan Henschen picked up the lone victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lily Volbert and Annika Niemeyer in second doubles.

GIRLS GOLF

Celina 225, Coldwater 238

Brooke Baucher's medalist round of 46 helped the Bulldogs get the win over the Cavaliers at the Mercer County Elks.

Ava Kelley added a 58 with Bryn Baucher carding a 60 and Claire Kuehne shooting a 61.

Madison Bruns led Coldwater with a 55. Lauren Ayers, Tori Timmerman and Ella Kaiser each shot a 61.

BOYS GOLF

St. Marys 154, New Bremen 179

The Roughriders won an Auglaize County battle over the Cardinals at Northmoor.

Brennan Steger shot a 1-under 34 to take medalist honors. Hayden Roby added a 39 for St. Marys with Braylon Lampert carding a 40.
