Celina's Tayrn Willrath returns a shot during a second doubles match against St. Marys. Willrath and partner Jadice Dorsten defeated Logan Henschen and Delanni Wilker 6-2, 7-5 to help the Bulldogs win the match over the Roughriders.

CELINA - Bright skies and warm temperatures made for a great atmosphere as St. Marys and Celina engaged in their annual cross-lake girls tennis matchup at the Booster Club Tennis Complex.

The host Bulldogs fended off some challenges to come away with a 5-0 sweep of the Roughriders to move to 2-0 in Western Buckeye League play.

"I'm proud of the girls. They've been working hard," said Celina coach Jan Morrison, whose squad is 5-1 overall. "They're having a good season so far."

St. Marys (0-4, 0-2 WBL) had presented a few challenges in matches.

St. Marys' Peyton Wilson returns a shot during her first singles match with Celina's Isabelle Thobe on Thursday at the Booster Club Tennis Complex in Celina.

In first singles, Roughrider Peyton Wilson battled Isabelle Thobe early, trailing only 4-3 at one break. Thobe came back, won the final two games of the opening set to take it 6-3, then shut out Wilson in the second 6-0 to claim the win.

"Peyton played a nice match. She didn't hit (with) a lot of pace that frustrates Isabelle," said Morrison. "Isabelle adjusted and figured it out that you didn't have to hit pace back and was able to take a few in a row to win the match."

Second doubles came closest to having to go to a third set. Celina's Jadice Dorsten and Taryn Willrath took the opening set 6-2 over Logan Henschen and Delanni Wilker. In the second set, the Roughrider tandem caught some fire and knotted the set at 5-all. The Celina duo came back to take the final two games for the 7-5 victory to wrap up action on the courts.

"That one could have gone either way," said Morrison about second doubles. "I thought we made some good adjustments and took the last two games to win it. They played smart to keep the ball in play."

Celina's second and third singles cruised to straight 6-0 shutout sets as Elise Muether won over Lillian Hernandez and Katie Guingrich defeated Kelly Imwalle.
