Fr. William Hoyng, C.PP.S.
Fr. William Hoyng, C.PP.S., 90, died at 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in the infirmary of St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio, where he made his home.
He was born on August 22, 1934, in Coldwater, Ohio, to Ernest and Helen (Losche) Hoyng. He entered the Congregation in 1948 at Brunnerdale, the Missionaries' former high school seminary near Canton, Ohio. He was ordained on June 19, 1961, at St. Charles.
Fr. Hoyng served as a teacher and pastor during his life as a priest. After his ordination, he taught at the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago, then at Brunnerdale. He served in vocation ministry from 1972-74.
In 1974, Fr. Hoyng was named pastor of St. Anthony Church in Detroit, where he served until 1980, when he became pastor of Holy Name Church in Cincinnati. He served briefly at St. Patrick Church in Sedalia, Missouri , before being appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Celina, Ohio, in 1992.
Fr. Hoyng served as pastor of a cluster of parishes around Bellevue, Ohio, from 1996-99, when he was named pastor of Precious Blood Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He served for a year as temporary administrator of St. Augustine Church, Minster, Ohio, from 2000 to 2001, before his retirement. In 2009, he moved permanently to St. Charles Center.
He is survived by his sisters Joan Vonderhaar, Celina, Ohio, Janet Hoyng, Montgomery, Ohio, and sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Brian Forschner, Loveland, Ohio, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother and his wife, Thomas and Betty Jo Hoyng, and brother-in-law Robert Vonderhaar.
Fr. Hoyng had a quiet manner and a cheerful presence. When talking with him, people felt invited to share whatever was on their mind, and he would listen generously and respond in kind. He was not afraid to express his innermost thoughts, but in a casual and unassuming manner that put others at ease. He had a passion for social justice and kept up to date on current events.
He was also up to date on technology, and was not afraid to try out newfangled ideas such as email, with more enthusiasm than many of his generation. He was a true digital pioneer and would help his brothers in community at St. Charles as they, too, waded in.
Fr. Hoyng had a beautiful singing voice; hearing him sing the Our Father brought many to tears. His family also enjoyed his beautiful voice at weddings as he sang the Ava Maria. His singing was an avenue to and representation of his inner life, where he turned over the mysteries of creation and tried always to come to deeper understanding.
