Evelyn Muhlenkamp
Evelyn Marie (Gehm) Muhlenkamp, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Recovery, Ohio passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, surrounded by her family at her residence.
She was born on August 13, 1946, Celina, Ohio, the daughter of the late Elmer and Alta (Walston) Gehm. She was the only child of Elmer and Alta's and the apple of their eye. Evelyn is survived by the love of her life of more than 56 years, John Muhlenkamp. They were married on July 27, 1968.
She is also survived by her two children, Maria Beth Borgerding of Cincinnati and Philip (Laura Nolting) Muhlenkamp of Columbia, South Carolina and her four grandchildren whom she adored, Sophia Borgerding of New York, New York, John "Jack" Borgerding of Fort Worth, Texas, and Harrison and Nolan Muhlenkamp of Columbia, South Carolina.
She married into a large, loving family and is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law: Dianne (Jim) Schwartz, of Cincinnati, Ted (Judy) Muhlenkamp of Coldwater, Lou (Luke) Brackman of Coldwater, Nick (Joanie) Muhlenkamp of Coldwater, Mariann Pubentz of Cincinnati and Joe (Julie) Muhlenkamp of Fort Recovery, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her father and mother-in-law, Ott and Rosalyn Muhlenkamp, and brother and sister-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Elizabeth "Betty" Meiring, and her brother-in law, Kenneth Pubentz.
Evelyn was a 1964 graduate of Celina High School and Wright State University in 1970 earning a BS in Education. She was an elementary school teacher of 24 years at Fort Recovery and St. Henry Local Schools where she taught kindergarten and fifth grade. Her warmth, charm, and wit endeared her to all she encountered, making her a beloved teacher. Even after she retired, she continued to do one of the Main Street bulletin boards and showcases in the new elementary school which gave her an outlet for her outstanding artistic ability, her love for the kids, and her continuing commitment to the school.
She loved to volunteer during her free time. Evelyn was one of the founding members of the Fort Recovery Friends of the Arts, she along with her husband, co-chaired the Fort Recovery Bicentennial Ball of 1991, taught Project Sunshine (an anti-drug abuse program), gave tours for the Fort Recovery State Museum, was on the initial committee for Van Trees Park, an active and faithful member of Psi Iota Xi (a service organization), and she was an active member, lector, and eucharistic minster of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fort Recovery.
Growing up, Evelyn helped her father raise animals of all kinds on the family farm. Her favorite animals were always the horses which she helped train for shows and to use in parades. Evelyn was an amazing gardener who enjoyed spending her time outdoors. She loved bird watching, working in her yard, and spending time sitting on her back porch with John in the evenings in her later years. Most recently, she enjoyed their balcony in Cincinnati where people would come and admire the flowers she planted for everyone to enjoy.
Evelyn had a quirky sense of humor and a heart full of kindness and love. Her friends and family were her real loves from whom she drew her strength, strong will, and personality from. She loved visits from her children and grandchildren, playing board games, cards, watching game shows (especially Jeopardy), shopping, and reading. She was a die-hard Joe Burrow fan. Evelyn along with John would often be found watching a Cincinnati Bengals or Cincinnati Reds game.
A memory box will be available at the church, and the family requests that everyone brings their favorite story or memory of Evelyn for them to cherish.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fort Recovery.
