ST. MARYS - Familiar faces led St. Marys' Will Ross to make his next step official as the midfielder will take his talents to Lima and play for the University of Northwestern Ohio soccer team.
"A lot of fellow athletes (at UNOH) bowled for the high school team here, and originally I was going to bowl before I chose to do soccer," said Ross, who will study sports management. "I've always loved soccer, the physical aspect of it and there's more to do."
Ross was a key player for the Roughriders as the team finished second in the Western Buckeye League with a 15-3-3 record. The team finished as district runners up and picked up a pair of postseason wins, including a 2-1 win over Celina in the district semifinal.
Ross had two goals in St. Marys' 7-0 win over Ontario in the postseason, and was named to the WBL first team for his efforts. He finished the season with seven goals and seven assists.
"I have to keep working and keep getting better and I hope the success carries over," Ross said.
He joins a UNOH program that finished 13-5-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the NAIA's Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Racers beat Cleary in the WHAC quarterfinals before losing 1-0 to Indiana Tech in the semifinals under ninth year coach Tyler Brock.
"They seem good," Ross said of the coaching staff. "I have to get to know them more but I'm excited to keep working and getting better."
