The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

Brazilian surfer Naysson Costa rides the tidal bore wave known as "Pororoca," during the Amazon Surf Festival held in the Canal do Perigoso, or "Dangerous Channel," at the mouth of the Amazon River near Chaves, Marajo Island archipelago, Para state, Brazil, Monday, June 5, 2023. The Pororoca, a word from an Amazonian Indigenous dialect that means "destroyer" or "great blast," happens twice a day when the incoming ocean tide reverses the river flow for a time.
