Robert Powell
Minister Robert L. Powell, 91, St. Marys, died at 10:35 p.m. Nov. 3, 2014, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Riverton, Ill., to Ralph and Susie Marsh Powell. On Oct. 3, 1946, in Hillsboro, he married Eleanore Harshbarger, who survives in St. Marys.
Also surviving are six children, Mark (Denise) Powell, Crestline, Terry Powell, St. Petersburg, Fla., Ron (Pam) Powell, St. Marys, Jon (Diana) Powell, North Port, Fla., Kim (Mark) Wirwille, New Knoxville, and Thomas (Kerri) Powell, St. Marys; 19 grandchildren, Jason Powell, Nashville, Tenn., Belinda Powell, Las Vegas, Nev., Bessie (Shane) Burgraff, Sarasota, Fla., Cassie (Clay) Wallace, Centennial, Colo., Nick (Mindy) Wirwille, New Knoxville, Kristy (Mark) Hoge, St. Marys, Emily (Kevin) Schrand, Cincinnati, Katie (Caleb) Allen, Cincinnati, Mitchell Powell, Charleston Powell, Maxwell Powell, Lydia Powell, John Powell, Josephine Powell, Audrey Powell, Emmanuel Powell and Russell Powell, all of St. Marys, and Matthew and Miriam Powell, St. Marys; nine great-grandchildren, Trey, Kyle, Ryan and Joel Burgraff, Ellie and Grayson Wallace, Henry and Eli Hoge and Cruz Wirwille; four stepgrandchildren, Kyle, Chad, Amanda and Ryan Schroemer; a twin brother, Harold Powell, Bluffton, Ind.; and a brother, Ralph Richard Powell, Springfield, Ill.
Deceased are two sisters, Joyce Wagy and Donna Braham, and mother- and father-in-law, Alva and Mary Johnson Harshbarger.
He was a 1941 graduate of Riverton High School. He attended Cincinnati Bible Seminary where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in ministry and a Bachelor of Sacred Literature degree.
He was a minister in the Church of Christ, serving congregations in Montezuma; Celina, where he helped found the church; Fort Recovery; and St. Marys. He also retired from the Mersman Furniture factory in Celina.
After his retirement from active ministry, he spent many years as a supply minister to many churches in the area. He also volunteered many hours to the Georgia Church Builders and built the St. Marys Church of Christ in 1978. He helped build numerous churches all over the U.S.
In his early life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Each summer from 1947-1990, he attended summer camp at Western Buckeye Christian Camp. He and his wife loved working with young people in the ministry.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, High Street chapel, St. Marys, Minister Mike Bratten officiating. Burial will follow Saturday afternoon at the New Market Baptist Cemetery near Hillsboro.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
