Erwin Schwieterman
Erwin Othmar Schwieterman, age 91, of Maria Stein, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, surrounded by family at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton, after a period of declining health.
Born on December 17, 1933, in St. Sebastian, he was the son of Clemens H. and Lauretta M. (Kuess) Schwieterman. On June 16, 1984, he married Louise Schaublin, and became a loving father to her five children, including Gary, who was 13 at the time. Erwin was cherished by his family and adapted with ease to the new family dynamics.
He is survived by his stepchildren: Michelle Moyer, (Janie Carlini) of Akron; Mary Ann Ring (Greg) of Bluffton; and Gary Schaublin (Patti) of Celina. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and enjoyed the company of his six great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Erwin shared a special bond with his many nieces and nephews, who fondly remember their 'Uncle Erwin' stories.
Preceding him in death were his siblings and in-laws: Earl Schwieterman, Virginia (William) Pottkotter, and Yolanda (Greg) Schmiesing, as well as stepchildren Rachel Osborne, (Mike) and Mark Moyer (Becky).
Erwin attended the former Sebastion School and was a lifelong member of the St. Sebastian Catholic Church. He spent his life as a farmer, cherishing the simple joys of family gatherings. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan, and later became the Commander of the VFW Post 9019 in Chickasaw. He was also a member of the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Columbus, and he and Louise volunteered at annual Fish Frys.
Erwin was an avid sports fan, particularly proud of the Marion Local Football team's achievements. He enjoyed puzzle books and was a beloved resident at the Mennonite Memorial Home, where he was cared for with kindness by the staff.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14, at 10:30 am at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, 715 E. Main St. Coldwater, OH.
Friends may call from 9:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Saint Sebastian Church Cemetery.
