Shawn Spencer
Shawn Eric Spencer, aged 60, of Findlay, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025. He was born on October 3, 1964, in Saint Marys, Ohio, to Charles L. and Janet E. (Beckett) Spencer, who preceded him in death. He was a beloved husband, father, "Opa," brother, nephew, and cousin, and he was a friend to all who knew him.
Thirty-six years ago, he married the love of his life, Shannon (Hoelscher) Spencer, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law Chloe and Douglas Tascoff, son Samuel Spencer, three grandchildren, Sophia, Elijah, and Isaiah Tascoff, siblings Laura (Donald) Yelton, Richard (Susan) Spencer, and Douglas (Andrea) Spencer, and sister-in-law Dionna (James) Chambers, as well as eleven nephews and nieces.
Shawn lived his life with optimism, humor, and positivity, and he never gave up. He loved his family and friends deeply. Kindness and friendship were the hallmarks of his life.
He was a wonderful father and took an interest in whatever interested his kids. Over the years, he coached their soccer, baseball, and hockey teams, and he also spent many hours playing video games, trading Pokemon cards, attending school activities, playing driveway hockey, and building backyard ice rinks. More recently, he loved spending time with his precious grandchildren, whose hugs, stories, and artwork brought him so much joy. Shawn loved to create memories.
Throughout his life, he made friends playing all kinds of sports, including baseball, swimming, football, Tough Mudders, and Iron Mans. He cherished his golf buddies, tennis partners, and card-playing friends. His friends from high school and college remained sources of laughter and loyalty to the end.
Shawn graduated from St. Marys Memorial High School in 1983 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in 1987. During his 31-year career with State Farm Insurance, he made lifelong friends and was recognized for "100 Acts of Good" in 2020. He also spent several years as Youth Director at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Saint Marys and continued to work with church youth throughout his life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Findlay, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 4, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the church. He will be interred at Elm Grove Cemetery in Saint Marys, Ohio.
The family requests that you carry out an expression of kindness or friendship in his memory. Shawn's faith sustained him in life and through years of tough cancer treatments. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the youth group at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 800 S. Main Street, Findlay, Ohio, 45840.
