The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

One of the largest favela's in Brazil, home to tens of thousands of residents in the country's largest and wealthiest city, Paraisopolis is grappling with crime and a pandemic that have challenged daily life for many who live there, but organizers say its people have built a vibrant community and are launching a 10-day celebration of its achievements.
