The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

Tourists ride in boats at an underground lake at the Salina Turda, a former salt mine turned touristic attraction, now listed by emergency authorities as a potential civil defense shelter in Turda, central Romania, Monday, Oct. 17, 2022. Fighting around Ukraine's nuclear power plants and Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons have reawakened nuclear fears in Europe. This is especially felt in countries near Ukraine, like Poland, where the government this month ordered an inventory of the country's shelters as a precaution. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)
