The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

People throw turnips at the Jarramplas as he makes his way through the streets beating his drum during the Jarramplas festival in the tiny southwestern Spanish town of Piornal, Spain, Friday, Jan. 20, 2023. The Jarramplas festival features a man in multicolored garb and pointy wooden headgear to shield himself from turnips. A crowd of men in the street pelt the man with the vegetables from close range at the fiesta held annually at Piornal, 200 kilometers west of Madrid, over two days. (AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)
