The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

A visitor attaches a paper strip with her wish written on it for the Star Festival or "tanabata" to a bamboo branch at a shop on a street Tuesday, June 27, 2023, in Tokyo. According to legend, deities Orihime (Vega) and her lover Hikoboshi (Altair), separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet only once a year on July 7. In Japan people celebrate the festival by writing wishes on strips of paper and hanging them under bamboo trees. (AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)
