The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

An installation created by the Milan's municipality is displayed at the Darsena del Naviglio canal in memory of a fishing boat packed with some 500 African migrants which capsized in 2013 off the shores of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, in Milan, Italy, Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023. The enormous scale of the tragedy, which caused 368 dead, became one of the largest death tolls in a migrant shipwreck in the Mediterranean on record. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno)
