The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

In many states, prisoners are denied everything from disability benefits to protections guaranteed by OSHA or state agencies that ensure safe and healthy conditions for laborers. In Arizona, for instance, the state occupational safety division doesn't have the authority to pursue cases involving inmate deaths or injuries. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)
