The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

People hold umbrellas during a sudden rain shower in Lycabettus Hill, Athens, Greece, on Friday, May 17, 2024 as the sun sets through a haze of dust blown over from North Africa. Greek health officials have warned people with respiratory problems and other health issues to avoid outdoor exercise due to dust carried across the Mediterranean Sea from the Sahara Desert. The dust is expected to persist for several days, while temperatures are forecast to exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) in parts of Greece Saturday. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris)
