The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

Visitors tour the Chateau de Versailles grounds during a test of a flame display as the equestrian venue for the 2024 Summer Olympics stands in the background, Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, in Versailles, France. Once the residence of French royalty, the chateau is one of the most popular tourist spots in Paris. Under the monarchy, horses were used by the royal family, its entourage and visitors to go hunting, show their equestrian skills and enjoy rides in the Versailles gardens. They were an essential part of festivities and a symbol of the king's power. (AP Photo/David Goldman)
