Dr. Victor Binkley
Former Rockford area resident Dr. Victor William Binkley, 70, of Bluffton, Ind., died Feb. 12, 2010, at his home.
He was born June 7, 1939, in Lanark, Ill., to Carl and Catherine Binkley. His mother survives in Fort Wayne, Ind. On May 25, 1985, he married Donna Toepfer, who also survives.
Other survivors are two daughters, Laurel (Rick) Gorney, Lexington, Ky., and Lisa (Mike) McPherson, Uniondale, Ind.; two sons, Jeff (Charlotte) Binkley, Danville, Ind., and Peter Binkley, Astoria, Ore.; four brothers, David, Jonathan, Stephen and Timothy Binkley; three sisters, Rose Mary Lampton, Ruth Ann Whatley and Rebekah Montgomery; and 10 grandchildren.
Deceased is a grandson.
He retired in 2006 as a general surgeon affiliated with Markle Medical Center of Indiana where he worked since 1970. He and his wife served as medical missionaries and spent six years working full-time in Haiti beginning in 1991. He helped establish medical clinics in Bogra, Bangladesh, and Pierre Payen, Haiti, and returned from the earthquake stricken region one week before his death.
He was a 1957 graduate of the former Rockford High School and a 1961 graduate of Findlay University, and earned his medical degree in 1965 from The Ohio State University. He served two years as a captain in the U.S. Army, including one year in Vietnam. He was a member of the Zanesville Indiana Church of God where he served as elder, Sunday school teacher and worship leader.
Private funeral services will be held by the family. A public celebration of life service will be held later with a date to be announced.
