Melvin Vallo
Melvin G. Vallo, 94, formerly of Minster, passed away at 9:42 p.m. April 12, 2013, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
He was born April 24, 1918, to Arthur and Margaret Knostman Vallo. On May 18, 1946, he married Florence Thieman in Minster, who resides at Dorothy Love Retirement Center in Sidney.
Also surviving are their children, Steve (Judy) Vallo of Tipp City, Mark (Sara) Vallo of New Albany, Mary (Tim) Ahrns of Beavercreek, Joe (DeAnne) Vallo of Loveland, Tom (Jennifer) Vallo of Kohler, Wis., and Martha (Jeff) Barlage of Minster; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters and brother, Connie Meyer of Minster, Audrey Meyer of Minster and Myrle (Betty) Vallo of Kettering.
He was preceded in death by his siblings and spouses, Rosella (Nick) Hogenkamp-Mehmert, Maurice (Julia) Vallo, Velma (Harold) Frierott; and in-laws Julian "Bud" Meyer, Wilfred Meyer and Paul Mehmert.
Mr. Vallo was a 1935 graduate of Minster High School, and served in the U.S. Army July 1941 until November 1945. He spent more than three years of that time in foreign service in the countries of Iceland, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
From 1946 through 1950, he was employed by a public accounting firm in Dayton and in 1951 left there to go with the St. Henry Bank. He was there for almost 12 years as the cashier and member of the board of directors. While there, he also served on the board of directors of The Ottoville Banking Company in Ottoville. In May 1962, he came to The Minster Bank where he was the president and chief executive officer until his retirement in May 1982.
He was an ardent church choir singer, joining the St. Augustine choir in Minster in 1935 and retiring in 2004. While he was in Dayton and St. Henry he sang with the choirs there. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Minster Civic Association and former member and president of the Kiwanis Club of Minster, Minster school board, 20-year volunteer at Joint Township Hospital in St. Marys and was recognized as Citizen of the Year from the Minster Civic Association.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Minster, Fr. Rick Nieberding officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Minster.
Memorial donations can be made to the St. Augustine Choir.
