Ronald Savage Sr.
Ronald M. Savage, Sr., 99, Saint Marys, died unexpectedly on November 7, 2015, at his residence.
He was born April 14, 1916, in Paulding County, Ohio, the son of Harry and Georgia (Longsworth) Savage. He married Wilma Miller on September 24, 1947, and she preceded him in death on August 21, 2008.
He is survived by his children: Jim (Maria) Sullivan of Celina; Ruth Ann (Lewis) Sell of Saint Marys; Ronald (Anita) Savage, Jr. of Saint Marys; Duane Savage of Saint Marys. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved dog, Sno-B.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his siblings Claron Savage; Millard Savage; Leland Savage; Wendell Savage and Geraldine Savage. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
Ronald was a 1933 graduate of Antwerp High School, and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, having served during WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Solomons as a combat infantryman. He was the oldest surviving veteran in Auglaize County at the time of his death.
Ronald retired from New Idea Company. He was a member of American Legion Post 323 and loved playing cards at the Auglaize County Council on Aging. He was a sports fan and had coached Little League baseball. He enjoyed solving word puzzles and could easily solve the New York Times crossword in a few minutes.
Funeral rites will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 12, 2015, at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Ohio, Pastor Mark Foor, officiant. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in Saint Marys.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be given to either the Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Heart Fund.
