Helping those in need

Volunteer Karla Kessler wraps a present Friday at Celina First Church of God. It is one of the 2,400 gifts donated to needy children in Mercer County through the annual Angel Tree program. Spokeswoman Kathy Mescher said 800 qualifying children whose parents signed them up in advance will each receive three gifts - a clothing outfit and two toys. The gifts are donated by community members and dropped off at various businesses, churches and organizations. The items are brought to the church where parents choose them and take them home already wrapped. Mescher said 200 volunteers help with the Angel Tree program each year. It is sponsored by OUR Home Family Resource Center and the Mercer County Department of Job and Family Services.
