Mercer County Auditor Randy Grapner, left, congratulates sisters Kendall and Kameron Bird, their father, Don Bird, and their Great Pyrenees dog, Marley, for winning the annual Top Dog competition. In her letter explaining the reason why Marley should win, first-grader Kameron Bird said the 110-pound dog likes to eat "baykin," sleep on the bed and play outside. She said they adopted Marley five years ago from the Animal Protection League. The pooch is now 8 years old. As the winner, Marley received the No. 1 dog tag for 2016, and the Bird family netted a $50 gift card from Walmart in Celina and a $25 gift card from Garwick's pet supply in Mendon. Grapner said the top criterion for choosing the winning dog is "cuteness." He reads the submissions to his staff and they vote on a favorite. He said Marley was chosen because he liked that she was adopted from a rescue and how Kameron Bird spelled the word bacon.
