Duane Smoyer
Duane A. Smoyer, loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away at the young age of 49 surrounded by his loving family and friends after a courageous fight against cancer on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
Duane was born on December 29, 1968 in Bowling Green, Ohio, to Brad and Betty (Smith) Smoyer. He married the love of his life, Karen (Steinbrunner) Smoyer on June 12, 1993 in the Immaculate Conception Parish in Celina, Ohio. Karen survives in Bowling Green. Their marriage produced 4 children, whom were his pride and joy: Hannah, Morgan, Ryan and Kyle.
Duane was a 1987 graduate of Otsego High School. After graduation, Duane enlisted in the United States Army where he served his Country Proudly during Desert Storm. After being honorably discharged, Duane began his career working for Cooper Tire and later switched careers to work for the Bowling Green City Public Works Street Division.
Duane was a member of the Grand Rapids American Legion Post 232 and the Bowling Green Eagles 2180.
Duane had numerous hobbies that kept him busy including mowing his lawn to perfection with his zero-turn lawn mower, going mushroom and deer hunting and fishing.
He was an avid Michigan fan until his son Ryan's college career path led him to The University of Notre Dame where he played college baseball. This resulted in Duane "jumping ship from Michigan" and led to his new love for Notre Dame and attending various sporting events.
Duane loved his work and often spoke about how he missed spending his days with his friends in the BG Public Works Street Division. However, above all these hobbies and interests, Duane loved being a husband and a father. He took great pride in attending all of his children's sporting and school events and the time spent being a family and cheering each other on.
Along with his wife Karen, Duane is survived by his mother: Betty Smoyer, of Pemberville, Ohio; daughters: Hannah and Morgan Smoyer, of Bowling Green, Ohio; a son: Ryan Smoyer, of Bowling Green, Ohio; sister: Laurie Smoyer, of Pemberville, Ohio; Tina (Paul) Neff, of Lima, Ohio; in-laws: Melvin and Martha Steinbrunner, of Celina, Ohio; along with a host of loving nieces and nephews and many special friends who were like family.
Duane was preceded in death by his father: Brad Smoyer and a son: Kyle Smoyer.
Visitation for Duane will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, from 3:00PM-7:00PM in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1460 W. Wooster Street/P.O. Box 648, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. Tele: 419-352-2171.
A Celebration of Duane's Life will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Deb Conklin of Peace Lutheran officiating in the Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home Remembrance Chapel. Interment will follow in the Weston Cemetery, Weston, Ohio.
Memorial Contributions in Duane's Honor may be gifted to the Otsego High School Athletic Boosters.
