Police: 'Irate' boy assaulted officer
From staff reports
COLDWATER - A juvenile male was arrested Sunday night after reportedly threatening two women and assaulting a police officer.
The Coldwater Police Department responded to a disturbance call at Briarwood Village at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday according to a news release. Two female employees who were entering the facility said they'd been confronted by an unknown male who had reportedly threatened to harm them. The employees were able to get to safety and notify authorities.
A short time later, patrolman Spencer Heinl arrived on the scene and saw a male matching the description provided by the women. According to the release, the male appeared to be irate, screaming and yelling.
Heinl attempted to contact the suspect, and a foot chase ensued. Heinl went back to his patrol car and again attempted to contact the male in the Mercer County Community Hospital parking lot. As he did so, the male reportedly charged at Heinl in a "violent, turbulent" manner before punching Heinl in the face through the car window and beginning to kick the side of the patrol car.
Heinl was able to exit the vehicle during the scuffle, but the suspect continued to resist arrest and assault him until backup units could arrive, according to the release.
The male was later identified as a 17-year-old juvenile and was transported to West Central Juvenile Detention Center for a probation violation. The release stated the case was being forwarded to the Mercer County Juvenile Prosecutors Office for a review of further charges.
Heinl suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from the hospital. The release stated the juvenile's behavior was believed to have been a direct side effect of LSD.
"We want to caution parents on having these discussions with your children and to be aware of what is out there," the release read.
The Coldwater police were also assisted by the St. Henry Police Department and the Mercer County Sheriff's Office.
