Van Wert's Owen Treece slides in safely at home as St. Marys catcher Ethan Wedding defends the plate during Monday's game at Shawnee High School.

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP - Hits were beginning to fall for the St. Marys ACME team.
Then rain began to fall in Shawnee Township.
Van Wert held a 5-2 lead on St. Marys in the sixth inning on Monday in the District 5 ACME championship when a heavy rain rolled through and forced the game's postponement. The teams will resume today at 5 p.m. at Shawnee High School.
The Cougars scored four runs in the first inning. The Roughriders, held hitless through two innings, collected four hits and scored single runs in innings three and five. Van Wert plated another in the top of the sixth and had a runner on third with two outs when heavy rain began.
Turner Witten launched a four-hit, four-run first inning for Van Wert with a two-run single after T.J. Reynolds and Parker Conrad were walked and hit by St. Marys starting pitcher Braeden Trogdlon. The Cougars scored two more on an RBI single by Kaden Bates and a delayed steal by Owen Treece, who doubled.
The left-handed Trogdlon rebounded to keep Van Wert scoreless for the next four innings. And St. Marys got back in the game.
The Roughriders cut into the lead in the third on an RBI single by Trogdlon, which scored Andrew Ibrahim after he drew a leadoff walk and stole second.
Two at-bats later, Carson Fischbach made it 4-2 when he scored Trogdlon with a sacrifice fly to deep right after Trogdlon and Henry Spencer began the inning with back-to-back singles.
Jake Place extended Van Wert's lead to 5-2 with an RBI single in the fifth. Soon after, a 10-minute downpour flooded the field.
Treece, Van Wert's No. 2 pitcher this spring, tallied five strikeouts and walked four through the first five innings. Witten and Bates each had two hits.
Trogdlon fanned five Cougars, walked two and hit a batter while giving up eight hits. He also had a pair of hits himself at the dish.
