Tom Nelson
Tom Nelson, age 61 of St. Marys, passed at 9:27 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Mercer Community Hospital, in Coldwater.
He was born February 11, 1961 in St. Marys to the late Charles Thomas and Mary Margaret Roth Nelson, Sr.
Tom learned about his lifelong trade at a young age from his grandpa, Verling Nelson, and spending time with Verling in his shop were some of Tom's most treasured childhood memories. From there to the end, Tom knew what hard work was, and as a towman, he took pride in being available to help his community 24/7/365. In 2005 he started his own business, Tom's Towing and Repair in St. Marys. He loved spending time in his shop, especially with his kids, and seeing their interest in the family business grow. Tom proudly passed his business on to his sons.
In addition to his work, he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and dear friends. Even though Tom was tough as nails, he had a soft spot for his grandchildren, who were the 'apples of his eye.' They knew there were no rules at Grandpa's house, especially when it came to how many cookies they were allowed to eat. He was also an avid motorcyclist who loved cruising the back roads with his sons and friends.
He is survived by his 4 children - Emma (Tyler) Mills of St. Marys; Kaycie (Mitchell) Minnich of New Knoxville; Clay Nelson of St. Marys; Chuck Nelson of St. Marys; his grandchildren- Everest, Juniper, and Wren; the mother of his children, Diana (Martindale) Nelson of St. Marys; and his best friend, Bill Willmann, who was a continuous source of support as Tom battled with health.
There will be a Celebration of Life Potluck Dinner from 3 - 8pm on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at the Noble Township Community Center, 16493 St. Marys River Road; St. Marys. This will be a time for friends and family to share food, laughter, and memories. Pleasebring a covered dish or dessert, and lots of stories.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Chained Eagles, 2426 Britt Avenue, Lima, Ohio 45806.
