Gary Kersten
Gary H. Kersten (Kert), age 78, of St. Marys Ohio passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at The Ohio State University, James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, OH.
He was born December 28, 1945 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Luella Kersten and his brother Ronald Kersten.
He graduated from Indiana University and was employed as a quality control engineer for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 40+ years. Quality was important to him. He always believed in doing what was right, not what was easy.
He was a member of the United States Army serving his country during the Vietnam war era. He was stationed at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado and helped in the rehabilitation of returning soldiers suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His compassion and empathy made him perfect for the job.
Gary firmly believed, from the Book of Matthew, in which Jesus said, "How you treat the least of these is how you treat me."
He knew the importance of taking care of others, especially the less fortunate. He brought comfort and joy to anyone in need and he never expected anything in return. His kindness and compassion were endless.
We will miss so many things about Gary. He had the greatest sense of humor. He always had a clever comeback to make you laugh. His jokes, puns, and stories were boundless and always put a smile on your face. When you would ask him how he remembered all this, he would respond, "I know stuff" which would also make you laugh. He was a devoted son and brother and had an amazing group of friends.
Lessons learned from Gary: be kind, treat others with respect, be generous and always let others know they can count on you. This is what love is all about.
Gary is survived by his sister Marcia L. Irwin (Terence), five nieces and nephews and eight great nieces and nephews and his lifelong best friends Jack Layman and Dick Zepernick.
We are all grateful and honored to have been part of Gary's life, a life well lived.
Visitation will be Saturday November 16, 2024 from 2 to 6 pm at Miller's FuneralHome 1605 Celina Rd (Ohio 703 West) St Marys Ohio, 45885.
