John Doll
John Joseph Doll, 72, lost his hard-fought battle with lung cancer surrounded by his family at Wake Forest Cancer Center in Winston Salem, NC on Thursday May 20, 2021.
John was born in Coldwater, Ohio on September 8, 1948 to the late Anthony & Helene (Schilling) Doll and brother to the late Robert (Bob) Doll.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Doll Mooresville NC, son Josh & Melissa Doll Winston Salem NC, daughter Jessica Doll Troutman NC and stepson Chris Sexton & Brain Pace Manassas VA. His 4 loving grandchildren, Spencer & Brycen Doll and Evelyn & Louise Leverone affectionately called him Pappa John. And sister-in-law Phyllis (Rutschilling) Doll Coldwater Oh. Along with 4 nieces & nephew, and 8 grand nieces and nephews.
John graduated from Coldwater High School and moved onto Bowling Green University where he achieved a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Minor in Math. From there he entered Penn State University where he achieved a Master of Physical Chemistry. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) was the next place that John landed, working for 35 years. John started as a patent examiner and ended his amazing career as Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Acting Director of the USPTO. After retirement, John continued his passion for the career he built, by continuing as an expert witness in the industry.
John was always very connected to his family, whether they were boating, vacationing or just enjoying each other at family gatherings. The extended Doll family in Coldwater Ohio was always part of his world, no matter how long it was between visits. John was passionate about a variety of things and loved being outdoors and enjoying life. His first true love was a 1967 Corvette he bought with money he made at the Shack in Coldwater Park in 1968. John's favorite sayings "Life is Good" and "Enjoy" were just a part of his welcoming outlook on all people and life. John never met someone who did not instantly want to befriend him.
There will be a celebration of life on June 19, 2021 at The Cove Church in Mooresville, NC at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, the family would love donations to be made to The Lung Cancer Research Foundation, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or The Humane Society (either local or of the US).
Arrangements by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home & Crematory, Moorseville, NC.
