Marilyn Sommer
On Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 10:10 P.M., Marilyn Kay Sommer of New Bremen quietly passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She enjoyed coffee with her lady friends, crafting, and music, and will be remembered for her sense of humor, sensitivity, her jovial laughter and her love of a good time. In addition to being a long-time and faithful member of The Church of the Holy Redeemer, she served for 15 years playing the organ, sang in the choir, and was a lector. After earning a nursing degree, Marilyn became a long-time housewife; with having 4 children and a truck driver husband. Her interest in all things needle-point led her to working at the former Ben Franklin craft store. She retired as a bank clerk.
Marilyn was the daughter and youngest child of C. Irvin and Gertrude (Boomershine) Swallow of Beamsville, Ohio, where she was born on October 4, 1937. She was married for 56 years to Aloys Stephen Sommer, Jr., who preceded her in death. Her living children are Alan (Christy) Sommer of Indian Trail, NC and Rhonda (Barry) Gill of New Bremen. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and by 19 great-grandchildren. A son, David Sommer of Botkins, OH and daughter, Theresa (Jim) McElwee of Zanesville, OH preceded her in death, as did her brother, Harold Swallow and her sister, Juanita Garrett.
A Funeral Liturgy Service in her memory will be celebrated at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen on Friday, January 16, 2026 at 12:00 Noon with Deacon Brad Feltz officiating.
