The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

This photo provided by UC Davis shows Brandon Berry, a researcher at the University of California Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, examines a collection bucket that scientists are using to measure particles and gauge wildfire's effect on the clarity of Lake Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, Calif., on Aug. 25, 2021. Scientists say it's too soon to draw definite conclusions about the lasting damage that record-setting wildfires will have on Lake Tahoe. But they're not wasting time. Many plan to bring their research plans to the Tahoe Science Advisory Council when it convenes for a scheduled meeting Thursday Sept. 16, 2021. (Brant Allen, UC Davis via AP)
