Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and several department heads came to Wright State Lake Campus Friday to reveal the State's action plan for dealing with Grand Lake over the next few months and to emphasize no one should contact Lake water. Chris Korleski, Director of the Ohio Environmental Agency, discussed a trial application of the chemical alum to two areas of the Lake. He also revealed the State is looking at adding the mineral silica to the Lake in the hope that diatoms will out competing the blue-green algae. Korleski also reiterated the State's positions against large-scale dredging and algaecides. Sean Logan, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, talked about agricultural land use including a ban on manure spreading during the next two winters. Dr. Alvin Jackson, Director of the Ohio Department of Health, gave details on hazards and effects of algae toxins. The reason for ODNR issuing guidelines for agricultural land use rather than the Ohio Department of Agriculture was explained by Director Robert Boggs. Further coverage of the State's plan and implications of the manure ban.
